about us

Flagstone Theatre are an indie company committed to making Scottish folk theatre for Scottish folk now.

We make work which celebrates Scotland’s wild places, people and stories, often reimagining overlooked tales through a contemporary lens.

Having grown up in rural communities, we strongly believe ambitious new Scottish theatre should be accessible to audiences across all of Scotland, which is why we make shows that are suitable for rural touring. Wee in scale, but never ambition, delivery or heart.

Co-creation sits at the bedrock of our productions, and we love working with communities at every stage of the process to make sure that their stories, voices and lived experience are authentically represented on page and stage.

We continue to be overwhelmed by the generosity of the people and communities who have shared their stories with us — from lighthouse keepers and fishing communities to monster hunters, WWII posties and surfers — helping us uncover the overlooked histories, unsung heroes and local folklore that are woven into Scotland’s cultural landscapes.

“A memorably powerful play in the great tradition of the scottish workforce drama.”

— THE SCOTSMAN, ON KEEPERS OF THE LIGHT

“THE ABILITY TO WEAVE SO MANY CHARACTERS THROUGH ONE SCRIPT AND ONE PERFORMANCE, TO SO SUCCESSFULLY CONVEY THE SENSE OF A RURAL SCOTTISH COMMUNITY, IS JUST ASTONISHING!”

— BREEKS AUDIENCE REVIEW

“Gray’s writing, paired with Sivewright’s shape-shifting performance and a production team attuned to the nuances of tone and texture, delivers a piece that is as emotionally resonant as it is theatrically inventive.”

— CORR BLIMEY, ON BEASTIE

“More than deserving of the full houses IT WILL SURELY PLAY TO TIME AND TIME AGAIN.”
